Jerclean: Additional Details
Retention of foetal membranes or retained placenta, is defined as failure to expel foetal membranes within 24 hr after parturition. Normally, expulsion occurs within 3–8 hr after calf delivery. Retention of foetal membranes (RFM) is one of the major periparturient complications among the reproductive disorders in dairy animals. The incidence in healthy dairy cows is 5%–15%. Placental detachment, rather than uterine motility, is responsible for retention of foetal membranes.
RFM is mediated by impaired migration of neutrophils to the placental interface in the periparturient period. Cows with RFM have increased cortisol & Decreased estradiol concentrations in late pregnancy. They may also have an altered prostaglandin (PG) E2:PGF2 ratio.
- A degenerating, discolored, ultimately fetid membranes are seen hanging from the vulva >24 hr after parturition.
- Occasionally, the retained membranes may remain within the uterus and not easily visible.
- Presence of in-apparent retained foetal membranes may be signalled by a foul-smelling discharge.
- In most cases, there are no signs of systemic illnesss but if seen, they are related to toxaemia.
- Cows with retained fetal membranes are at increased risk of developing metritis, ketosis, mastitis, and even abortion in a subsequent pregnancy.
- Cows that have once retained fetal membranes are at increased risk of recurrence at a subsequent parturition.
- It negatively influences health, reproductive efficacy and welfare of the animal.
-
- Fertility of dairy cows is affected
- Cows may develop bacterial infection and become ill and thus reduce production
- It causes significant economic losses to farmers due to decreased milk production,
-
- Milking with retained placenta is unfit for consumption & therefore can not be sold.
- Delayed calving leading to a lengthy period between births hence low milk production.
- It is unhygienic to milk a cow with a decomposing afterbirth hanging on it
- Treatment cost and decreased market value of the animal, if not treated adequately and promptly
- Abortions and premature calving particularly with Brucellosis or Myocotic infection.
- Twin or still birth calves, makes uterus weak
- In cases of milk fever, the lack of muscle power can weaken the animal and reduce its ability to push out or expel the placenta.
- Dystocia or difficult calving may also stress the uterus after the calf has been delivered.
- Dirty cattle shed may lead to early infection of the placenta that may cause inflammation and hence delay or reduced chances of placental separation & expulsion.
- Unnecessary manual assistance of calving cow,
- Lack of Vitamin E or selenium deficiency may lead to reduced muscle power in the uterus.
- Other conditions such as advancing age, poor feeding, liver flukes & copper deficiency may lead to general weakness
- Over-conditioned cows; excessive corn silage or grain fed to dry cows or excessive calcium fed
- Calcium and phosphorus deficiency
- Excessive vitamin D (over 50,000 to 100,000 units daily).
